Short answer
Ask: (1) how the pattern is made, (2) how many fittings are included, (3) what aftercare exists, (4) the total price in writing, and (5) pay attention to which questions they ask you. Any tailor — Savile Row, local atelier or travelling — can be judged on these five answers.
1. Ask how the pattern is made
The labels “made-to-measure” and “bespoke” can mean different things by maker and market. Ask whether the provider adjusts a house block or drafts an individual pattern, what posture and fit information it records, and whether it keeps those records for reorders.
2. Ask how many fittings are included
Ask for the number, purpose, timing, location and cost of each fitting. Some providers measure once; others include checks during or after making. No single fitting count applies to every service, so get the plan in writing.
3. Ask what happens after delivery
Request the written alteration, remake or return policy, including its time window, eligibility, cost and responsibility for shipping. Do not assume an adjustment is included unless the quotation or policy says so.
4. Ask for the total price in writing
Compare the same garment, cloth, construction, currency, tax, delivery and fitting scope. Ask whether import charges or alterations are additional and when the quotation expires.
5. Ask how the maker evaluates fit
Explain what has not worked in previous garments and ask how the provider assesses those areas. Ask which changes its process can handle and how you can inspect or discuss the result before accepting it. Clear answers help you compare service; they do not guarantee a particular fit outcome.
A fair disclosure: we are a tailor, and this page is written so you can use it on us. Our answers to all five are below each city guide — and in person, where they belong.
